Team Bodacious Broads - Relay for Life

"Your test results are back and show that you have cancer." Have you been sitting in a doctor's office with a loved one and shared that horrible moment with them while they heard those scary words? Maybe you have waited for months to find out what was wrong with someone and now they come to see or call you with the news that they have been diagnosed with cancer. Even worse yet: have you been told that you have cancer?

Each year about 564,000 Americans will die of cancer; that is more than 1,500 people a day. In the US, cancer accounts for nearly one of every four deaths and is the second most common cause of death, heart disease being number one.

April was Cancer Control month and Relay for Life Team Bodacious Broads wanted to do something about it. The team hosted a benefit to recognize this. All proceeds from the event are being donated to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Fillmore County which will be held in Wykoff on Friday, July 30th.

Team Bodacious Broads got its name from Dean and Mavis Brunsvold's grandson, Andrew Storsveen (Barb Brunsvold Storsveen's son), who is a junior at UW Eau Claire. He felt the name fit the group of women perfectly! The team consists of three women who have been diagnosed with cancer along with their family members and friends who have been affected. The team's first year was in 2009 and raised a little under $4,000.

Relay for Life is a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and to fight back against the disease. Team Bodacious Broads can relate to this on all three levels and are excited to continue to raise funds for the Relay for Life of Fillmore County to remember, celebrate and help fight back!

Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man's passion to fight cancer into the world's largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives. (relayforlife.org)
