Chatfield Elementary raises nearly $7,000 through Walk-A-Thon

By Third grade teachers

What a beautiful day for a walk! Chatfield Elementary kicked off their First Annual Gopher Pride Walk-A-Thon. Students were eager to collect money for a healthy lifestyle and raise money for a great cause: their school.

Each student had a chance to collect money for the walk-a-thon. The money collected will directly be used for special programing for the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Ihrke stated, “The donated money will be used for supplemental programs, such as Accelerated Reader, IXL and maybe getting some educational guest speakers to come to our school, such as inviting someone from the Minnesota Science Museum. What an amazing community to help raise an incredible amount of money.” Accelerated Reader is software for school-age kids for monitoring reading comprehension. IXL is software that provides comprehensive, standards-aligned content for math, language arts, science, and social studies.

On Wednesday, June 1st, all students participated in the walk-a-thon and enjoyed about 45 minutes outside promoting a healthy lifestyle. As classes finished their walk, they put a check by their teacher’s name on the poster and helped announce it to the entire school by ringing a cymbal. At that time, Mr. Ihrke made a whole school announcement telling the amount of money their class raised. The anticipation carried throughout the day as classes heard the cymbal and eagerly listened to find out how much money each class collected in comparison to their own.

A huge thank you to the following local businesses that donated items for student incentives. These amazing business include Chatfield City Hall, Kwik Trip, Cabin Coffee, Subway, Dairy Queen, Jac’s, Shari’s Bowling Alley, Threads, Sunshine Foods, and Studio 223. These donated items added to the excitement of the day. An award ceremony was held Friday morning to congratulate everyone on the money raised as well as present the incentives to the winning students.

We think Mr. Ihrke said it best when he said, “The support of this community is nothing short of astonishing as evidenced by raising nearly $7,000 by simply asking for donations! We are proud to be a part of the Chatfield School system.”
