The streets of Preston have been buzzing with vehicles and people since the beginning of the May 18 trial, now in its eighth week, focused on a Winona man, Jack Willis Nissalke, age 43, who was indicted on July 1, 2008 on four charges: two counts relating to to premeditated first degree murder and two counts relating to aidingand abetting first degree murder.

The charges revolve around the murder of Ada Frances Senenfelder based on an incident occurring around June 5, 1985 in Winona County.

Over the past eight weeks, the prosecution and defense have cross-examined numerous witnesses before the grand jury of Winona County, consisting of 14 Fillmore County residents, with Judge Robert R. Benson presiding over the courtroom.

A Frye-Mack Hearing was conducted to evaluate whether the DNA analysis was admissable into evidence, with DNA analysis experts such as Amy Liberty of Minnesota BCA and Jacquelyn Kuriger of the University of Minnesota.

The jury has listened to hours of audio tapes containing interviews from the original investigation dating back to 1985.

The jury has also viewed the Winona Police Department crime scene video, and a video of a return visit to the residence of Ada Frances Senenfelder, where the murder occurred. In addition, the jury viewed a video and photos of the autopsy, identifying knife wounds that resulted in the death of the victim.

As of the Fillmore County Journal's press time, the court was preparing to have the jury hear the closing arguments made by Nissalke's defending attorney, Charles A. Ramsay, and the prosecuting attorneys of Winona County, Charles E. MacLean and Thomas E. Gort.

A verdict is anticipated by the jury by the end of the day on Tuesday, July 7, 2009.
