Richard Donald Young, Jr., a 19-year old white male from Chatfield, appeared before Judge Robert R. Benson in District Court Monday, June 21, 2010, facing five counts for his part in aiding and abetting in criminal damage to property in the first and third degree, property theft, receiving stolen goods and tampering with a motor vehicle. If convicted on all five counts Mr. Young could face a maximum sentence of six years in prison, 270 days in county jail, and fines amounting to $16,000.

On April 7, 2010, Chatfield police Officer Dan Dornick received a call regarding a car whose alarm system alerted the driver that something was wrong. The car was parked in the parking lot of the Chatfield Public Library and from across the street the driver witnessed a black Volkswagon Jetta drive away from the area at about the time the alarm system went off in her car. Upon inspection, it appeared the vehicle had been broken into so Officer Dornick began a search for the suspect Jetta. He found the vehicle parked near Skippy's grocery store and immediately approached the vehicle. At this time he learned the names of the occupants in the vehicle were Richard Young, Jr., and his passenger, Alexander Denning. While questioning the occupants, Officer Dornick observed a handgun stored in the passenger's door storage compartment, resulting in Officer Dornick drawing his pistol and instructing the occupants to rest their hands on the dash while he called for backup. Fillmore County Sheriff's Deputy Leif Erickson arrived on the scene for further questioning and assisted in transferring the occupants to the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at approximately $2,600.00 and the stolen property was valued at less than $500.00.

Bail for Mr. Young was set at $20,000 conditional and $10,000 unconditional. His next scheduled appearance in court is set for July 19, 2010.

Alexander Robert Denning, an 18-year old white male from St. Charles, also appeared in District Court before Judge Robert R. Benson on Monday, June 21, 2010, as an accomplice in the above incident. If found guilty on all five counts, he, too, could face a maximum penalty of six years in prison, 270 days in county jail and fines amounting to $16,000. Mr. Denning was released on his own recognizance and Judge Benson set bail at $10,000 unconditional. Mr. Denning's next scheduled court appearance is July 19, 2010.
