Mabel Food Shelf tours Channel One

Several members of the Mabel Area Food Shelf Committee recently toured and volunteered at Channel One in Rochester. The Channel One Regional Food Bank receives surplus food from the food industry and distributes it through a network of member agencies in a fourteen county service area in Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. The Mabel Area Food Shelf is one of the member agencies who helped to distribute over eight million pounds of food during the past year. As a member agency, they can order food from a list of available items to supplement the local food donations. There is usually a fee for these items to cover the cost of handling and delivery. The tour allowed the committee members to see the amazing amount of organization required to sort the food donations received and prepare them for delivery to the proper sites. Their volunteer efforts resulted in labels being affixed to approximately 1500 cans of food so they could be placed on the shelves for distribution.

The Mabel Area Food Shelf has been blessed with generous donations, some monetary and some food, personal hygiene items and paper products. It has seen increased use, especially in recent months. Donations are always needed and gratefully accepted. They look forward to extra donations during the month of March as that is Food Share Month. Food Share Month is a time when donations are actively solicited and recorded. Some companies offer matching grants to the area food shelves based on the comparative amount of money and food received that month. As a result, donations received during March result in additional resources that can be used to serve area patrons. The committee is looking forward to seeing results of special efforts made by local individuals and organizations during March to support this worthwhile program.
