Is it OK to give my pet people food as part of their diet?

Fri, Jun 24th, 2011
Posted in Ask the Expert

No. Giving pets people food as a treat or as part of their main diet can cause many unwanted problems. First of all, pets who are offered food off of your plate tend to develop begging behaviors that can be very undesirable. Also, table food is high in calories and causes weight gain. But probably the most important reason not to give your pet people food is that many pets will suffer intestinal disturbances from eating food that is high in fat which can lead to gas, diarrhea, and even vomiting. Some pets may even become severely ill and require hospitalization. Keeping your dog or cat on a high quality pet food and staying away from table food is the best way to maintain your pet's health and avoid these unwanted side effects.

Will spaying or neutering my dog or cat make them "fat and lazy"?

Fri, May 27th, 2011

Most pets gain weight because they eat more calories than they expend. Obesity has little to do with whether your pet is spayed or neutered. We highly recommend that all non-breeding cats and dogs be sterilized. Making the decision to spay or neuter .....
