Mabel '50's and '60's Days

Some people call them the "good old days." It was a time of great change in the country, and in pop culture, that is looked back upon fondly by so many people that there are still celebrations in honor of the era. The 1950s and 1960s are the inspiration for a yearly event in Mabel that celebrates the music, the cars, and the culture of the time.

This is the twelfth annual year of the celebrations, and it takes place on Saturday, August 14. Every year there is a car show, and all of Main Street is lined with old cars. There is also food to be enjoyed, and an old-fashioned burn-out competition in the afternoon.

Bob Peterson of Mabel is the President of the '50s and '60s Days celebration committee. According to Peterson, the committee meets once a month during most of the year to plan this event. They used to have a band play, but could no longer afford to expense. However, oldies music will be playing through the speakers along Main Street. The celebration is always held the second Saturday of August.

"We have always lucked out with the weather," said Peterson. "If the weather is nice this year we should have a lot of people in town."

Peterson mentioned that new members of the committee are always welcome. Right now there are about 14 people involved, although Peterson said there are always people in the community willing to help out when needed.

During the year, the committee sponsors dinners to raise money for '50s and '60s Days. Peterson said they keep their expenses pretty low, and they are just trying to break even.

The car show participants pay ten dollars per vehicle when they register that morning. The people who bring their cars in are also the ones that do the voting. Last year, Main Street was filled with about 110 cars. According to Peterson, there are 50 trophies given out that day. There is a trophy for best in show, and then three awards for each of the classes of cars. There are about eighteen different classes, including restored, original, off-road, and truck. There is also a trophy given out for the burn-out, which takes place at 4 p.m. on the south end of Main Street.

Along with everything else, there is also a large raffle held that day. "This year we are raffling off a 32 inch flat screen TV, a Nintendo Wii, and a quilt," said Peterson.

People of every age group show up to look at the old cars, listen to music, eat food, and visit. People also come from all over the pl .....
