Commonweal receives grant support

Fri, Jul 23rd, 2010

LANESBORO, MINN. - The Commonweal Theatre Company, located in historic downtown Lanesboro, was the recipient of grant monies totaling in excess of $63,000 during the first half of 2010. Now in its twenty-second season, last year The Commonweal celebrated the 100th production in its history and hosted more than 20,000 patrons at public performances.

The Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) awarded $10,000 through a Capital Purchase/Improvement Grant for the purchase of state-of-the-art lighting fixtures, which will help the theatre become more energy efficient while also enhancing the artistic quality of its productions. SEMAC has also awarded Commonweal $20,000 for 2010 and 2011 through an Arts and Cultural Heritage Grant in support of Commonweal Presents, a special performing arts series beginning this summer. This grant comes through the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature through the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment of 2008.

The Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) awarded The Commonweal $26,406 in support of its 2011 Ibsen Tour. This biennial tour - which is currently scheduled to include stops in Duluth, Red Wing, Fergus Falls, and Grand Rapids - brings the Commonweal Theatre Company's distinctive expertise with the classic works of Henrik Ibsen to audiences across the state. The Minnesota State Arts Board receives its funding through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and private funders.

The New York City-based Shubert Foundation contributed $7,500 to the company's 2010 season. Established in 1945, the Foundation maintains that the most effective way to encourage the artistic process is by providing the general operating support that reinforces the structure that nurtures its development.

The Commonweal is a non-profit professional theatre with year-round main stage and educational programming located at 208 Parkway Avenue North in historic downtown Lanesboro. For more information, visit www.commonwealtheatre.org or call 800-657-7025.
