DreamAcres' performance series opens with a BOOM!

The Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative on DreamAcres Farm in Southeastern Minnesota launches its summer Play! in the Barn performance series with BOOM! An International Lost and Found Family Marching Band on Friday, June 3, at 8pm. This is the first in the series of three shows that will take place on DreamAcres during the summer months. Tickets for all shows are $12, or a season pass is available for $30.

BOOM! is a comic musical about the timely if unlikely reunion of a family of orphans. Abandoned at an early age in some distant land by their distractible scientist parents, the orphans gleefully find each other and create a marching band. The music is upbeat, contemporary, even raucous. Director Stephanie Roberts of Theatre Dell' Arte conceived and created BOOM! for the Kansas City Fringe Festival in 2009, where it played to sold-out houses. In 2010, Carla Noack, of Lanesboro and also in the cast, brought BOOM! to Lanesboro for one night and filled the house. This year, BOOM! tours to California and returns to Minnesota for three shows: one in Minneapolis, one at DreamAcres, and one in Lanesboro. DreamAcres offers wood-fired pizza from 5-7pm on Friday nights, a meal option which will complement this first show.

On July 23, the Dreamery brings Southeastern Minnesota's nationally acclaimed story-tellers, Michael Cotter and Bev Jackson, to the barn stage in combination with Spring Valley's Irish Minstrels. Mr. Cotter is of Irish heritage and grew up on a farm outside Austin, Minnesota. He has made a name for himself in story-telling and recently hosted his own radio program out of Austin. Bev Jackson is a native of Albert Lea, and tells stories of her rural upbringing that provide a contrast to Mr. Cotter's stories. The Irish Minstrels will provide music between stories, for an evening of story and song.

Finally, on August 20, the Dreamery celebrates Onion Fest, an event that celebrates the multiple layers to our American identities through a multi-layered vegetable. Onion-based dishes are served out of the farm kitchen from 5-7pm during which the Brass Messengers of Minneapolis will play brass music from all over the world with a lively, playful approach. At 8pm, the Play! in the Barn Series final performance, Accidental Hero, by Patrick Dewayne, will begin. Accidental Hero is Dewayne's educational and entertaining account of his Czech grandfather's involvement in WWI.
