Dynamic Street Performance of Traditional Music at Vesterheim

DECORAH, Iowa —Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum welcomes members of the band Bjärv, an exciting, traditional Swedish folk band, performing from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, June 14, in the museum courtyard outside the main entrance.

Bring a lawnchair and enjoy Bjärv's fresh, contemporary interpretations of traditional Swedish folk songs. Infused with youthful charm, their innovative, stunning harmonies and show-stopping improvisational musicianship make their live performances a memorably rocking good time for all audiences.

You'll hear fiddle by Olof Göthlin, 2006 Riksspelman (Fiddler of the realm in Sweden), and nyckelharpa by Ben Teitelbaum, the first American to earn a degree on that instrument. The nyckelharpa is a bowed and keyed stringed instrument from Sweden.

The duo is fresh from Nisswastämman, the premier midwestern festival of traditional Scandinavian music in Nisswa, Minnesota.

Vesterheim is celebrating Iowa Museum Week and the opening of “The National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition.” Voting for People's Choice Awards in the exhibition is now underway, and everyone can vote for their favorite weaving, rosemaling, carving, and knife. Stop by Vesterheim for music, art, and community.

Through 24,000 artifacts and 12 historic buildings, Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center in Decorah, Iowa, shares the most comprehensive collection of Norwegian-American artifacts in the world. This treasure is also a center for folk-art education, offering a wide variety of classes in authentic Norwegian folk art every year. For more information on the museum’s exhibitions, classes, events, membership opportunities, and ways to donate, check Vesterheim’s website at vesterheim.org, call (563) 382-9681, or write to Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, 502 W. Water St., P.O. Box 379, Decorah, IA, 52101-0379.
