To the Editor,

Thank you for the column Monday, November 13, 2000 on the Electoral College (source Weekly Reader).

It is good to be reminded and have a reviewal of how the presidential candidate is elected to that office; and, why there is an electoral college.

To the Editor,

Is Freedom of Speech important? When the dust settles we may find Governor George Bush president.

He will raise his right hand and solemnly swear to “preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.”

In Texas in 1995 a bill was passed stating that anyone who speaks out against a perishable food product is guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to several thousand dollars in fines. The law gives corporations permission to sue individuals who make statements against their product.

Governor Bush’s office was inundated with calls from consumers protesting the bill and heavily lobbied by corporations who wanted it signed.

Governor Bush did nothing to stop this bill! It became law. This law is in direct defiance of our first amendment rights to “Free Speech”.

This is the law that the beef industry lawsuit against Opra Winfrey was based on.

Bill 722 protects the food industry who includes “toxic chemicals” in processed foods we eat and drink. It hinders the public from being informed.

Governor Bush clearly supports corporations instead of concerning himself with public health.

A not so obvious effect of the flooding is underground. Many private wells or the acquifer that feeds them were polluted. In the county, a total of 62 wells have been tested for bacteria. We became interested in the results because 23 of these are in our watershed project (21 in Forestville Township and 2 in York Township). Of the 23 tested, 20 had coliform and of these, 16 also had E-coli. The source of coliform bacteria can be ma .....
