Fall colors and road tours

By Mike McGrathThe county commissioners couldn’t have selected a better time than last week to continue their tour of the county roads. The beautiful Fillmore County landscape was ablaze in autumn’s splendor when the board headed out in the county van to go look at the state of the road projects, both ongoing and proposed, within the districts of Commissioners Randy Dahl and Marc Prestby.

Also on the tour was a stop in Harmony to look at a county-owned lot that the City of Harmony is interested in purchasing.

Before the road tour began, Mark Thein, Business Development Coordinator, and Joel Dhein, EDA Director and City Administrator of Harmony, visited the board to explore the possibility of purchasing a lot that adjoins a warehouse property that the city wishes to develop as part of an economic development project.

The lot is located adjacent to both the city’s property and the county’s road shop property and currently is home to the county’s sand pile. The Harmony Economic Development Authority (EDA) would like to purchase the county’s lot because it provides better access to the loading docks on their development project.

The County Board visited the lot on their tour and will continue discussions with the Harmony EDA.

New Veterans Clinic

The chief of the county’s Veteran Services office, Larry Hunt, briefed the board on the new Veteran’s clinic that opened in Rochester on August 7. The new clinic will serve the region’s veterans with outpatient care and also provide referrals to the Minneapolis VA Hospital.

Director Hunt also noted that veterans can receive prescription benefits through the Rochester Clinic, enjoying a significant savings over the regular prescription costs. A physician and a nurse practitioner provide services at the clinic, and a physician’s assistant will be added in the future.

The clinic had a waiting list of up to 900 patients when it opened, but under current staffing, it is expected that it can handle up to 1,200 patients without a waiting list. The local Veteran’s office provides transportation for veterans to the VA hospital in Minneapolis from Fillmore County twice a week, but Hunt does not anticipate that he will be providing regular shuttle service to the Rochester clinic.
