Parenting is not an easy job. According to the Search Institute of Minneapolis, parents should not be expected to raise their children alone. Communities must be active participants in helping youth grow to be healthy, contributing adults. In fact, it is suggested that every child have at least three adults, other than parents, who provide support and encouragement on a regular basis. Some children are fortunate to have grandparents, aunts and uncles, and neighbors who fill this important role.

Many children are not so fortunate. Their extended families may not live nearby, their neighbors may be very busy with their own lives, and they just haven’t connected with a special teacher or coach. However, these children now have other options! Participating in the mentor program will give a child the opportunity to develop one-to-one relationships with a caring adult from the community.

Through “Connections: “Mentoring for Youth” the young person meets with the mentor on a weekly basis. Together they decide how to spend their time. It may be going fishing, playing catch, doing crafts, cooking, baking, hiking, biking, or playing board games. The idea is for the mentor and youth to get to know and trust each other, and to have fun together. In other words - to become friends.

If your child is between the ages of 9 and 14, and doesn’t have grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other adults that interact with him or her; maybe this program could help fill the void. We have mentors who have completed training and are just waiting for a new friend. If you and your child are interested in the mentor program, call the local coordinator in your community. Chatfield - Laurie Bakken, 867-3726; Lanesboro - Vicky Topness, 467-24; Harmony, Preston, Fountain - Phyllis Hendrickson, 937-3455.
