Are You Game?

A lot has gone down in the world since the last column. The attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. make sports seem terribly unimportant. But I must say it was nice to see Major League Baseball return last week so that we could begin the process of getting back to some kind of normal footing.

The last time I told you how the Vikings were going to put the Panthers in the Intensive Care Unit, but it looks like they took the Vikes to the E.R. instead. If the Vikings are without an offense, like they were against Carolina, it will be a very long season indeed for them.

As you may remember, I picked the Rams to make it into the Superbowl by edging out Tampa Bay in the N.F.C. finals. There they will see the Dolphins, who may be the surprise team in the American Football Conference this year. Hereís how it will all unfold:

In the AFC Central, you have the defending Superbowl champion Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens will win their division with their trademark defense, with the Tennessee Titans finishing a close second. While the Titans have picked up Kevin Carter, they have lost three big-name players - Yancy Thigpen, Kenny Holmes and Al Del Greco - which will hurt them offensively. The Steelers will edge out the Jacksonville Jaguars for third place. The Jags offense sputtered last year, and while they have gotten softer, the division has gotten tougher. Cincinatti will come in fifth and perennial doormat Cleveland , will bring up the rear. Those two teams no one cares about except for Cory Dillonís Fantasy Football Stats.

In the East there will be very tough competition with Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts leading the charge. Miami will come in second, followed in order by New England, the Jets and Buffalo dead last. I donít know why Buffalo got rid of Doug Flutie, heís a proven winner, thatís all Iíve got to say.

Now looking at the West, where we have Denver, Denver, Denver, yes, Denver - oh, this is a great team. They are awesome. One team that is going to slip and slide down in the division is Oakland. There are three other teams that are going to slip and slide up - Seattle, Kansas City and San Diego. Look for Seattle second in the division, then Oakland, Kansas City and San Diego. This might be the most competitive division in the league; one dominant team and four scrappy guys in a real dog fight.

In the playoffs, I pick Denver as number one seed, followed by Baltim .....
