A Dogs Life.....By Sam

A dogs life can be the best of times and it can be the worst of times, mine is somewhere near the middle.

By and large, I have it pretty good, I have my own room and three meals a day. I suppose that a dog shouldnt expect any more than that and I dont mean to complain but there are some things around here that drive me nuts. For one thing, when He takes me to town He insists upon wearing that damned hat and everyone looks at us as though we have escaped from someplace somewhere.

When He first took me in, I had the run of the house for a while until She told Him that either I was going to be kept outside or He was going to sleep and take his meals out in the garage.

Well I have news for Her. I much prefer the garage to that living room and kitchen of Hers. What is the point in having all of those chairs with their soft cushions if someone cant lay down on them once in a while. He calls her Roberta but I call her Mrs. Clean. She is always picking up after me and Him and I dont know why She is so uptight. It must be something about Him and I can see how He might get on Her nerves after living with him for over forty-five years.

We used to have a big van and He always took me with him when he drove it. She has a little red car and She wont let me in it or Him drive it, just because He got it caught up a tree one time. Now that van was a sheer joy to ride in and a dog could get up and move around it. It had a big bed in the back and I could take a little snooze when we were on a long trip.

Sometimes when they had company and She didnt want me around, He would let me get in the van and I could sleep on that nice soft bed until their company went home and She was none the wiser. That good old van hasnt been around for the last couple of weeks and they have a new red thing that doesnt look like any car that I have ever seen or chased. Well, I have a fair idea I shall never see the inside of it and I notice that He doesnt get to drive it very often. Maybe She will let us have the little red one. It isnt much fun to ride in it but it is still better than nothing.

There is another thing that I shall never understand, She is always and everlastingly trying to give me a bath, even when I dont need one. Whenever She makes Him give me a bath, He gets us in trouble, like the time He got us kicked out of the car and dog wash. I dont mind it when She cleans out my ears, that fee .....

Last week, in this very paper, there appeared a quote from Garrison Keillor where he extolled the value of true newspapers: those that report crime, uncover scandal, and feature a few "irreverent columnists." This tr .....
