After reading the Fillmore County Journal and River Valley Reader concerning our public libraries I was compelled to write this letter. The comment made by Paula Michels (Fillmore County Commissioners Report - August 20, 2001 Journal) that school and public libraries have entirely different missions doesnt make sense to me.

Libraries (no matter where they are) promote reading, provide research material, and emphasize the enjoyment of reading. The Public Libraries cater to adults and children alike. If there is material unfit for children, it shouldnt be in the Public Library either. If there is material unfit for children how is it kept from them at the Public Library? The same could be done at the school. Comfrey, MN is doing the same thing.

The people who are so concerned about the tax dollars being wasted should be concerned about the duplication in the libraries. There is no reason why the public libraries shouldnt be located in the school. No one has ever given me any sensible reasons why it wouldnt work. SELCO does not promote this concept because that would eliminate half of their business. I have heard from people who say it wouldnt work, but I would like to hear from you people who think it would work.

I met with our Library Board in Lanesboro about the possibility but I felt like I was talking to deaf ears. They wouldnt even consider looking into the concept that has worked in Pipestone for over 25 years. I know it could work if the people wanted it to work.
