Ronald Thorson

Ronald Thorson, 65, of rural Mabel, a retired Lockheed Corp. employee, died April 28, 2001 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, Iowa.

Ronald was born Aug. 28, 1935, in Decorah to Levi and Esther (Rotvold) Thorson. He graduated from Mabel High School in 1953. In January 1954, he joined the Marines, served with the 1st Marine Division as a tank repairman and served in Korea. After his discharge, he lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a short time before moving to California. He was employed by Lockheed Corp. in California for almost 31 years and retired in 1992. On Aug. 17, 1992, he married Yong Sun Kim in Reno, Nev. They had lived in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, since 1993. Mr. Thorson was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 299 of Mabel and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Randy (Salome) of Livermore, Calif.; three daughters, Connie (Steve) Roesberg of Modesto, Calif., Lorrie (Don) Myron of Temecula, Calif., and Kathy (Tom) Six of Mountain View, Calif.; a stepson, Kenton Detwieler of Maui, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Barth of Waterloo, Iowa, and Lois Camalander of Chaplin S.C. A brother and a sister preceded him in death.

The funeral for Ronald Thorson was held May 3, 2001 at the Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 299 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
