God Bless our Firefighters

Firefighters and emergency personnel rushed to the scene after a merciless tragedy began to unfold on Tuesday, September 11. I, like so many others watched with fear and disbelief. The events occurring seemed to continue, one being more devastating than the last. In search of some miracle or hope in light of the tragedy, firemen rushed towards the mass chaos. At that moment a CNN news reporter brought to attention the obvious, “As the average person rushes to safety, the firemen race towards the terror.” These words will be forever etched into my mind, because I, like most other people take them for granted. We expect firemen to show up whenever they are needed, without realizing that they too have families left behind.

Jim Westby, Fire Chief in Mabel, has served his community for the past nineteen years. Last spring in a local incident, Jim fell through a deteriorated floor. The Mabel Fire Department has twenty volunteer firefighters whose jobs are hazardous, challenging and require an inner strength that I cannot begin to understand. Jim said, “We look for candidates that are aggressive, trustworthy, and will back you up when it really counts.”

Harmony has twenty six members in their fire department. Stuart Morem, current Fire Chief has been a member of the department for the past twenty five years. The Morem family has supplied four generations of firemen. Stuart says, “The role of a fireman has changed over the years to include more rescue work and ambulance assistance.”

Both fire chiefs speak on behalf of all firemen when they say, “Helping others is extremely rewarding.”

With one ring of a pager, firemen put their personal lives on hold, risking their own lives for others. For this we salute your courage, your strength, and your bravery.

God bless America and our firefighters.
