Wykoff woman has ridden motorcycles for over fifty yearsBy Carol ThouinMonday, February 18, 2002

For more than a half century LeOtis Earley Mensink, of Wykoff, has enjoyed a hobby stereotypical of a man. This grandmother of two rides a motorcycle, but not just any cycle. She's the proud owner and operator of a FLHTC Classic Harley Davidson, a machine she describes as big and beautiful.

LeOtis got the cycling bug watching her older brother ride his Harley while growing up on their West Concord farm.

"I would tease him to give me rides," LeOtis recalled. After relentless pestering, her brother finally gave in one Sunday afternoon and she was allowed to hop on back for a ride up and down the field driveway.

"I remember thinking, oh, this is great, we're only going up and down the driveway," she said. But then her brother called her bluff.

"I remember him saying.'it's all yours', he got off and I was left on my own," LeOtis said.

Luckily, she was a quick study and was able to maneuver the hog around the hay field. That's all it took. From then on, LeOtis was hooked. Three months later, despite some reservations from her father, LeOtis purchased the first of five cycles she would own throughout her life.

"He wasn't awful keen about the idea at first," she said. He changed his tune later on and fully supported his daughter's unusual hobby.

LeOtis was breaking ground for women in the mid-40s when she first began riding. It was quite unusual for a woman to own her own bike.

"I remember there being only one other girl from the area who rode back then," she said. LeOtis spent free time riding with her brother and his friends and never hesitated to venture off on her own. It wasn't surprising that her first husband, who passed away in 1979, was also an avid cyclist. The couple spent lots of time on the road together. When she was expecting the first of the couple's two sons, LeOtis continued her road trips, until the final months of pregnancy when maneuvering became difficult.

"We later bought two sidecars so we could take the boys with us on Sunday picnics," she said. After her husband died, LeOtis continued riding, but solo this time.

"When we rode, I always led," she said. "I remember the first time I went out aloneI looked back in the rear view mirror and he wasn't there."

In 1983, LeOtis married Roger Mensink, a non-cyclist from Wyk .....
