It should have been the hi-light of the social season, it should have been a night to remember, instead it was the blight of the season and a night no one wanted to remember. The winter had been long, cold, dry and dreary and Clancy thought that it was high time something be done about it.

Clancy had given parties before and he knew that to be a success and any fun at all, a good deal of thought had to be given to the matter. A hall must be rented, a band hired and a truckload of refreshments must be ordered. There must be singing and dancing and special effects. He would have his old friend Mike moriarty lead the dancing with a Jig and a Reel. Kitty Callahan could sing anyone under the table and would be more than happy to oblige. For the special effects, Fancy Flanagan would do her Tumbling and Juggling act and for Master of Ceremonies, non other than Motor Mouth Muldoon!

Clancy shopped around a bit and found that the only available building that was large enough to hold the multitude was Finnegans Sales Barn which could be had for $125.00 for the night. Once he had rented the barn, the next item was the band but it couldnt be just any band, only MacNamaras Band would do and they could be had for $500.00.

Now he had the building nd the band, the next thing would be the refreshments and they would have to be liquid. What with all that singing and dancing going on, there was bound to be a mighty thirst amongst the revelers and water would never quench it. Now it wouldnt do for the boys to bring their own bottles; things could get out of hand and besides, the Barn and the Band had to be paid for somehow. His brother-in-law, Peter OTool owned the local lumber yard and agree to set up a temporary bar at no charge and things were beginning to look up. Now as for the liquid itself, Caseys Catering would stock the bar and cover the expense of the Band and Barn if Clancy would man the bar. That proved to be a bit of a problem since Clancy didnt have any friends or acquaintances that didnt drink and the temptation to help oneself might prove to be more than even a teetotaler could stand and besides there werent any teetotalers in the county as far as he knew. He finally struck a deal with the OHara boys, Tim, Tom, Ted and Terry who promised to tend with only a nip or two while on duty if Clancy would give them a bottle for their private stock.

Now everything that he could think of was set exce .....

I noticed the scent of a skunk when I went into our barn a few weeks ago. I had hoped that the skunk was just a passer-by who had become mildly offended or that maybe I had driven over a road kill and gotten some of that .....
