Edwin "Shorty" Kappers

Edwin "Shorty" Kappers , 91, of Spring Valley, died June 29, 2001 at the Spring Valley Care Center.

He was born September 10, 1909, in rural Cherry Grove, the son of John and Louise (Cloutier)Kappers . He married Marian Elfrink on September 25, 1935, in Greenleafton, where they lived until moving to Spring Valley in 1945. He operated Kappers Construction Co. until his retirement in 1976. Mrs. Kappers died on October 18, 1995. He was a longtime member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church and the Root River Country Club in rural Spring Valley. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include one son, Larry (Marilyn) Kappers of Spring Valley; two daughters, Arlys (Donald) Gehrke of Rochester, and Sharon (Roger) Lowe of Lake Zumbro; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Floyd "Ted," Vernon "Barney" (Judy), Melvin "Tim" and Clayton "Sie" (Arlene), all of Spring Valley; and three sisters, Edna Vikse and Betty (Harold) Westphal, both of Spring Valley, and Bess (Harlan) Berg of Ostrander. He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

The funeral was July 2, 2001 at the Greenleafton Reformed Church with the Rev. Jonathan Loper officiating. Burial was in the Greenleafton Cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
