Are You Game?

The NBA season is fully underway. Youd have to live under a rock not to have seen MJ, his Airness, firing away for the Wizards. After all, TNT and NBC plan on having the lowly Wizards on the tube whenever possible; theyll be on twice this week. ESPN has even been doing a shot by shot analysis of Michaels every move, as if they were the European paparazzi following a reincarnated Princess Di around.

Why we should be interested in watching this ugly spectacle is beyond me. But I regress. Welcome back Michael, but your Wizards are bonafide lousy.

How about them T-Wolves. Off to a 6 and 0 start before the Cavs edged them 107-104 last week. You would think that if you score 104 points you should win...but, well, this is the NBA where more arms get iced every night than in Major League Baseball. Apart from the Bucks, who the Lobos Minnesotas took downtown in Milwaukee by 16 a week ago, the Wolfies havent really been tested.

Give credit to Coach Flip Saunders for taking advantage of the new rule allowing zone defenses, which is anti-big man (as in stopping Shaq). This will help teams without a real center (like the T-Wolves).

I like the Wolves a lot, with Joe Smith coming back after a year in Detroit. This allows Kevin Garnett to move to small forward and clears Wally Sczerbiak to move to shooting guard. The benefits of this are already obvious.

Another team off to a good start is the Sacremento Kings even though their go-to man, Chris Webber is hurt. The addition of Michael Bibby improves their guard play and gives them one more scoring threat. His replacement of Jason Williams, the human turnover machine, gives the Kings more consistent floor play all around.

More on hoops next time.

The Vikings are hold-your- nose disgusting. They just might not win another game this year. They play the Giants tonight. Remember that 41-0 licking last year in the NFC Championship game. Well, after being crushed by Tampa Bay and the Eagles the past two games, things dont look good. The only thing going for the Queenies is that they play well in the Metrodome where they shoe-horn 60,000+ larynx-killing crazies yelling-at-the-top-of-their-lungs into the Dome. And that, sports fans, is the only positive thing the Vikes have going for them tonight. Their playoff chances are about as good as done.

How about them Bears. Da Bears. Da Bears. Who would have thunk it. Could they win t .....

On my usual late morning walk down our Big Woods road, I cross the bridge over the South Fork, pass the road to Jaymour Larson's old place, round the big curve and am nearing the tall post that once supported Pancake .....

While long winter naps certainly seem appealing, a cold weather snooze lasting some five or six months is just a tad bit excessive. Factor in not a breath of fresh air or single bit .....

As I sit down to write this column, I wonder if there is really anything left to say about gardening. This morning we all awoke to see a covering of white. It was quite lovely, but sad, as it does herald .....

I just got up off the kitchen floor. Our five-year-old dishwasher needed my attention. About two weeks ago it started running water out its door. Maybe it was trying to tell us that the kitchen floor needed scrubbing. .....

I have three computers on my desk. I pretend that the sheer number of microchips and high-tech gear humming in proximity to me are directly proportional to the important role I play in putting out a paper every week. .....
