To the editor,

We are thankful for the courageous leadership of our government officials in this difficult time, and for the restraint they showed, not responding with a knee-jerk reaction, but working to build a wide coalition of nations.

We are glad to see our nation and world turning toward God. Differing faiths are naming peace as a common cause. God is strong enough to help us achieve peace together. We ask our political leaders to temper the human desire for retribution with wisdom, caution and mercy. May they maintain tolerance and freedom.

We pray for the terror victims and families, and pray that there be no more victims. We ask our leaders to seek ways to stop the suffering in Afghanistan. Destruction is not the only way, nor the best way, to bring peace. We pray for those people as well as for our nation and our military.

The evil action of September 11 was not impulsive. Seeds of evil are planted long before such events occur. We call upon the President and Congress to review and reconsider the policies that make our government hated in parts of the world. We ask them to work as hard for peace as for waging war. Future conflicts will arise where suffering is ignored and survivors grow up alienated and angry. We must fight poverty and injustice now instead of fighting humans in the future.

Even now, we have great hope for the future. Wise people working with God’s inspiration could still bring peace.
