Section 1A team wrestling is always a dog-fight. One team looking to chew its way are the #12 in A Chatfield Gophers. Matt Mauseth’s group ended the year with three wins. Two were key tight bouts over section foes. In the process, the Gophers accomplished two big milestones. Chatfield hosted Class A Lean and Mean Zumbrota-Mazeppa (13-8) on Friday. The Cougars trailed just once, taking six of the first eight weights to lead 26-7 after 152. Ben Carrier (113 > 17-4 major decision) and Kail Schott (138 > 5-2 decision) had the Gophers only early wins. Chatfield went 1-3 in decision matches early. But they won five of the final six bouts. Tate Karver (160 > 7-4 decision), Seth Goetzinger (170 > fall), and Grady Scott (182 > fall) cut the lead to 26-22. Chatfield forfeited 195. Z-M forfeited 220 (Campbell Berge) and 285 (A.J. Karver). Karver’s win gave the Gophers their first lead, their 20th victory, 34-31. A day later, Chatfield hosted PEM and D-E. The Bulldogs fell 55-21. Chatfield took the first five weights (27-0). They grabbed forfeits at 126 (Jack Dornack), 132 (Nathan Allen), and 170 (Goetzinger). B-Carrier (113), Carson Rowland (120), K-Schott (145), G-Schott (182), and Caden Nolte (285) had pins. Berge won a 14-2 major decision. Gage Bartels (106) won a 3-1 decision. That set up #12 Chatfield (20-1) versus Lean and Mean Dover-Eyota (20-3). The Eagles won a previous meeting 37-21. In the re-match, Chatfield never trailed. They got wins from Bartels (106 > pin), Dornack (120 > 17-2 tech fall), and Rowland (126 > 10-2 major decision) for a 15-3 lead early. The lead was 9-6 at that point the first dual. D-E then took four of five from 132 thru 160 though. K-Schott (138 > pin) had the sole Gopher win. Blake Lehnertz (160) beat Tate Karver by 3-1 decision (in SV-1) to tie the match 21-21. In the teams’ first meeting, Lehnertz pinned Karver (at 170), as D-E led 25-12. Tied with three ranked guys left, Chatfield took four of the final five bouts; Goetzinger (170 > pin), G-Schott (182 > 10-3 decision), Berge (195 > pin), and A.J. Karver (220 > 10-7 decision). Berge’s win clinched the match. Chatfield prevailed 39-27, a 28-point turn-around. The big wins garnered the Gophers (22-1) Section 1A’s top seed. They’ll take on 8-seed St. Charles (9-12). Chatfield has won 14 straight. Bartels (#10 at 106) and K-Schott (#8 at 138) have joined T-Karver (#4 at 160), Goetzinger (#4 at 170), G-Schott (#5 at 182), and A.J. Karver (#4 at 220) in the state rankings.
Grove Wins East, Helps Decide West, Too
The Spring Grove boys (11-2, 12-2) wrapped up the SEC East title and greatly influenced the West race by splitting with the two co-leaders, Lyle/Pacelli and Southland. First came a 68-47 Monday non-conference win over visiting FC. The Falcons (3-7) led SG (10-1) for most of the first half, but Caden Grinde (27 pts, 12-15 FTs, 5 rebs, 5 stls), Carson Gerard (13 pts, 6-10 FGs, 10 rebs) and Elijah Solum (13 pts, 5-10 FGs, 4 stls) paced the Lions past the hot-shooting Falcons, whose 55% shooting from the field was the best of any SG foe this season. FC was a season-best 47.1% from deep (8 of 17). But SG outscored the visitors by 21 points at the line in a 21-point win. Limiting FC to only five free throws (3 for 5), the Lions earned a season-high 35 free throws and sank a season-high 24 charity points. SG had 12 more O-boards and 14 fewer turnovers. Zach Haugerud led FC with 19 points (8-16 FGs, 3-9 threes). Logan Corson added 9 points (3-4 threes). FC is 2-5, 3-8. The next night at Lyle, the Lions fell 51-38 to L/P, which received 31 points from All-SEC sophomore Buay Koak. He hit three consecutive treys during a 14-point L/P run that erased a one-point Lion lead early in the second half. The Lions received double-digit scoring from both C-Grinde (16 pts, 4-11 threes, 4
asts, 4 stls) and Tysen Grinde (14 pts, 6-8 FGs, 5 rebs) with support from Gerard (6 pts, 7 rebs) and Solum (8 rebs). SG shot a strong 40% from 3-point range (6 for 15), but a season-low 33% from the field with season-lows of six assists and four free throws. SG’s seven game win streak was snapped. L/P (12-1, 13-2) stayed atop the SEC West, while former co-leader Southland (11-2, 12-2) dropped one
game back after losing at SG, 61-54, on Friday. The last of 10 lead changes came with a driving basket from Solum midway through the second half. SG hit 14 of 19 free throws while limiting the Rebels to 2 for 4 (a 12-point advantage in a seven-point win). Leading the Lions were C-Grinde (15 pts, 7 rebs, 6 stls, 3 asts), Solum (15 pts) and Gerard (14 pts. 6 rebs, 4 stls). Rebel post Ethan Forthun had 18 (pts) and 10 (rebs). SG scored 41 of its 61 points in the lane. Southland took more threes (30) than twos (24). The Rebels shot 74% from “two-land” but 20% from distance. They outscored SG from the field (52-47) but did not hit enough treys to make up for the free throw deficiency.
Johnson Sets School Mark, Gophers Improve to 11-4
It wasn’t a perfect week for Chatfield boys basketball, but they continued an excellent season. Their top player made a statement as the school’s best ever (scorer for sure). On Monday, Jeff DeBuhr’s group took on L-A. Senior guard Reid Johnson needed seven points to become the school’s all-time leading scorer (surpassing Bill Harwood’s 1,506 points set in 1955). After a 0-for-3 shooting start, Johnson ran off 14 straight Gopher points. A deep pull-up three set the mark. Chatfield led most of the first half. They were up 43-36 in the second when L-A hit four straight, and 6 of 8 threes. The Cardinals went on an 18-2 run to lead 54-45. Prior to the shooting spree, L-A was 2 of 19 from deep. Chatfield couldn’t recover and fell 62-54. Johnson led the way (27 pts, 10-16 FGs, 3-7 threes, 4-4 FTs, 3 stls). David Castleberg also made double figures (14 pts, 7-11 FGs). Drew Schindler added 7 (pts), 4 (rebs), and 4 (asts). Chatfield beat L-A 65-46 in February. Coach DeBuhr on Johnson’s record: “an outstanding accomplishment for a fine young man.” The Gophers then beat D-E, 70-51. Cole Johnson (14 pts, 6-10 FGs, 8 rebs, 8 asts), Schindler (13 pts, 5-10 FGs, 3-5 threes), and R-Johnson (10 pts, 6 rebs) hit double figures. Castleberg (8 pts, 10 rebs) and Henry Gathje (8 pts, 4-6 FGs) helped. It was Chatfield’s tenth win. Johnson had 37 points the first time Chatfield beat D-E. The Gophers ended the week beating W-K at home 65-45. R-Johnson (21 pts, 9-18 FGs, 3-9 threes, 8 rebs, 4 asts) notched his tenth 20-point game. Schindler (11 pts, 3-7 threes), Castleberg (8 pts, 4-7 FGs, 6 rebs), and C-Johnson (6 pts, 5 rebs, 8 asts, 3 stls) helped. PEM (12-1, 12-3), Chatfield (9-4, 11-4), St. Charles (6-4, 6-4), and L-A (7-5, 10-5) top the TRC-West. The Gophers are one of nine 1AA teams with nine wins.
GMLOS Wrestling
Finishes Regular
Season 28-4
It is probably a school record for wins, though in an odd year of only dual meets. GMLOS wrestling ended the last week of the season with six matches. The middle ‘Tri’ was the big one. The defending section champs sport a nifty record heading to the post-season. The Bulldogs first took out Westfield 59-15 and Maple River 66-9 at the Razorbacks “Tri” (See “Wrestling” for more). The #10 Bulldogs then hosted Class A Lean and Mean D-E and Class A #7 Jackson County Central. Versus the Eagles, GMLOS won just five matches. Four were by pin; James Jacobsen (120), Braxten Wiste (126), Rece Voigt (152), and Noah Sayles (182). Cameron Sneed (195) won a 9-1 major decision. D-E won all five decision matches (106, 138, 145, 160, 170). Four were one or two point matches. Four ranked GMLOS guys fell to unranked D-E guys, though two Bulldogs were up weights (including top-ranked Anthony Romero getting pinned). Nonetheless, Sneed’s win (195) gave GMLOS the lead, 28-27. But the Bulldogs forfeited 220 and were pinned at 285. D-E won 39-28. GMLOS regrouped by beating J.C.C. They started with Romero (#1) beating Nolan Ambrose (#2) by 3-0 decision at 106. But the Huskies built 21-9 (after 138) and 27-17 (after 160) leads. GMLOS got decision wins at 170 (Smith > 10-5) and 182 (C-Jacobsen > 6-4), a forfeit at 220 (Sneed), and a pin from Christian Luthe (285). Luthe’s fall gave GMLOS a 35-33 win. J-Jacobsen (120 > fall), Felten (145 > 9-1 major decision), and Voigt (152 > 11-0 major decision) also won. JCC beat D-E 39-30 the same night. GMLOS ended the week beating Stewartville 66-9 and Austin 72-6 (See “Wrestling” for more). The ‘Dogs (28-4) are 1A’s 3-seed and will wrestle Caledonia (6-seed, 9-17). Romero (#1 at 106), C-Wiste (#6 at 126), Felten (#6 at 145), Voigt (#4 at 152), Smith (#2 at 160), C-Jacobsen (#5 at 170), Sayles (#4 at 182), and Sneed (#7 at 195) are ranked.
