It is an oxymoron. A majority of the “Journal 11” golf teams all descended upon an ascension. Wabasha-Kellogg hosted a mid-season tourney that featured eight girls’ ,nine boy’s teams including Chatfield, Fillmore Central, Lanesboro, Houston, Caledonia, and LARP. The event was held up on the hill, at Wabasha’s Coffee Mill Golf Course, overlooking the Mississippi River (hence descending upon an ascension). Teams from Lanesboro (boys) and Caledonia (girls) came out on top, as well as players from FC and Caledonia. Continuing their strong year were the Burro guys. Krissy Overland’s group shot an 18-hole, 348 to top nearest foes LARP (376), W-K (378), and FC (393). Chatfield (414) took sixth, Caledonia (418) seventh, and Houston (496) ninth. Lanesboro was led by Hayden Lawstuen (82 > 1st-tie), Cale Anderson (86 > 4th), and Clay Schwichtenberg (89 > 5th), who all finished top five. Lawstuen co-medaled with FC’s Jake Fishbaugher, as each shot 82s. The Burros fourth golfer, Kaden Stettler (91 > 8th-tie) finished top 10. Journal 11 golfers Andrew Hoiness (85 > 3rd) and Anders Shurson (90 > 6th) of LARP, Dominick Konkel (91 > 8th) of Caledonia, each finished top 10 as well Other Journal 11 golfers shooting under 100 were Nate Storlie of FC (98), Tadyn and Bralyn Burnett (99s) of Chatfield, and Carson Thompson (99) of LARP. On the girls side, Caledonia’s Jenna Wiebke (81) was medalist by 11 strokes over her closest competitor, FC’s Courtney Hershberger (92). Wiebke’s performance helped the Warrior girls (381) take first over closest foes FC (416), LARP (439), and Chatfield (473). Houston (541) took sixth and Lanesboro was incomplete. All four Warrior scoring golfers made the top 10, as Ally Jilek (96 > 3rd), Libby Jilek (102 > 7th-tie), and Miranda Schroeder (102 > 7th-tie) joined Wiebke. FC players Marissa Topness (101 > 6th) and Chloe Morem (105 > 9th) joined teammate Hershberger in the top 10. LARP had two in the top 10, Halle McElmury (99 > 4th) and Alexa Agin (108 > 10th). Chatfield’s Mollie Henry (111) and LARP’s Haley Krull (109) shot sub-115.
Burro Boys Golf Stays Perfect
Sandwiched around the W-K golf tourney, Lanesboro boys took on two SEC meets. Krissy Overland’s team stayed perfect with two more wins. Lanesboro (174) beat Kingsland (216) at the Preston course on Monday. Clay Schwichtenberg (41) medaled. Hayden Lawstuen (43), Cale Anderson (44), Kaden Stettler (46), and Caden Anderson (47) all shot sub-50 while Reece Benson (51) was just above. Gavin Merkel (48), Nick Eickhoff (53), Kaden Rath (56), and Ethan Carr (59) were the Knights scoring golfers. The Burros then took on a key SEC match-up versus Southland and probably the league’s top golfer, Max Schmitz. Schmitz (37) medaled, but Lanesboro used its depth to win the meet 174 to 186. Lawstuen (39) led the way. Schwichtenberg (43), Caden A. (45), Cale A. (47), Benson (48), and Stettler (48) all shot sub-50. Cohen Wiste joined Schmitz as the only Rebels to do so. Nick Edland and Dawson Sorenson had 51s. The Burros improved to 8-0.
Warrior Girls Down FC in Key Golf Match-Up
The last time Caledonia and Fillmore Central girls golf met up, it was for the Section 1A title. The Falcons beat the Warriors by 11 strokes to clinch their sixth straight trip to state in 2019. Caledonia will bump up to Class AA this year, so the teams won’t see each other in the playoffs. But Jenna Wiebke and her teammates stayed perfect by handing FC its first loss of the year. Robbie Sobczak’s girls bested Aaron Mensink’s group by a 192-210 final. Wiebke, who finished second at the 2019 1A Meet to a since graduated (state runner-up) Madison Scheevel, medaled (42) for the Warriors for a sixth straight meet. Ally Jilek (47), Lexie Hoscheit (49) and Libby Jilek (54) rounded out Cal’s scoring golfers. Miranda Schroeder (55) and Elly Melde (56) also shot sub-60. Courtney Hershberger and Marissa Topness (50s) paced FC. Lily Miller (54) and Myleigh Scheevel (56) rounded out FC’s scoring golfers. The latter two are the younger sisters of previous FC stand-outs Grace Miller and the aforementioned Scheevel. FC golfed without a top player Chloe Morem (illness). The Warrior girls improved to 6-0. Meanwhile, the boys match was decided by eight strokes. FC got the win 189-197 behind medalist and 2019 state entrant Jake Fishbaugher (40). Luke Hellickson (48), Tyler Mayer (50), and Anthony Kiehne (51) rounded out FC’s scoring golfers. Riley Lange (53) wasn’t far off the scoring pace. Evan Hawkins (45), Dominick Konkel (48), and Cole Welsh (49) shot sub-50 for Caledonia. Josh Molling (55) scored fourth. The Warrior boys fell to 1-6. The meet was at Caledonia’s MaCal-Grove Golf Course.
Hughes’ Efforts Dominate GMLOK Deuce With M-C
Softball is a sport that can be dominated by one player. A good pitcher goes a long ways to making a good softball team. On a Monday night in Spring Valley, GMLOK hurler Lily Hughes was dominant both on the mound and at the plate in a doubleheader with Mabel-Canton. Hughes led off game one with a laser shot home run to right field. The first three Bulldog batters all authored hits, as John Fenske’s group scored two in the inning for a 2-0 lead early. Those runs were all Hughes needed. She gave up just three hits and no Cougar runner made it to second base. GMLOK threatened for more runs, tallying 10 hits. But base-running errors and/or good Cougar fielding resulted in five Bulldog outs on the base paths. In the end, Hughes (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 K) pitched a shutout and GMLOK prevailed 2-0. She was also 3-for-3 batting (HR, RBI, R). Lucie Voigt (2-3) added two hits. Five other Bulldogs had a hit including Miner (1-3, R), who scored the other run. Jordyn Newgard (1-3), Thea Snyder (1-3), and Natalie Murray (1-2) had M-C’s hits. Emily Carolan gave up just two runs in defeat (6 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, Loss). Game two had GMLOK again get a couple runs in the first inning. The edge would be 2-1 after three, 4-1 after four, 4-2 after five, and 5-2 after six. Hughes authored her second career home run, a 2-run shot in the fourth. GMLOK made it academic in the seventh, scoring four runs. Lydia Voeltz’s two-run double was the key hit. The Bulldogs prevailed 9-2. Hughes had another home run in the second game (3-5, HR, 3 RBI, R) while again getting to ten strikeouts on the mound (7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB, Win). Zoe Scrabeck also had three hits (3-4, 2B, RBI, R). Voeltz (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Voigt (1-4, RBI, R), Kelly Hanson (1-4, RBI), and Nicole Hanson (1-1, RBI) also drove in runs. Audrey Webster (1-2, 2 R) scored twice. Molly Lee (1-3, 2B, RBI, R) had M-C’s only run-batted-in. Emma Tollefsrud (1-3, 2B, R) scored the Cougars’ other run. Carolan (7 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) took the loss. GMLOK had as many hits against her in inning seven (six) as the previous six combined (six).
Bulldog Baseball Posts Two Late Week 1-Run Wins
It was a crazy couple days for GMLOK baseball. Games on Thursday and Friday saw a total of 42 runs scored. Both had the Bulldogs winning by a run. At St. Charles, GMLOK trailed 10-4 entering the top of seven. Gavin Sweeney had a huge go-ahead 3-run double in the inning, as the Bulldogs scored eight in the frame to lead 12-10. The Saints scored one in their seventh and had the tying run on third, but a Dustin Copley strikeout ended things. GMLOK prevailed in comeback fashion 12-11! LeRoy boys Sweeney (1-2, 2B, 3 RBI) and Andy Lohuis (1-3, 3 RBI, R) each drove in three runs. Nick Fetterly (2-3, RBI, 2 R) and Devin Carr (2-4, RBI, R) had multiple hits while Connor Tangen (1-2, RBI, R) helped. Lucas Heusinkveld, Copley, and Cole Kruegel each scored twice. Copley got the win in relief. Spring Grove then came to town in a rematch of a 2-1 Lion extra inning win earlier in the season. SG led 3-0 early, but a six-run fifth inning put GMLOK up 8-3. The Lions then had a five-run sixth to tie things at 8-8. Logan Brumm had a two-out, three-run double in the frame. The Lions then went ahead in the sixth 9-8, but left the bases loaded. GMLOK tied it in their sixth, after tripling, Copley scored on a Connor Munson hit. In the seventh, with it 9-9, a Ty Cleven double and a Jonah Udstuen single put the Lions up 10-9. In the bottom of the inning, GMLOK had three reach without a hit. The tying run scored on an error. Copley then had the walk-off game-winning single to propel Dakotah Rostad’s group to a 10-9 win! Copley (3-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 3 R, 4 1/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, No Decision), Carr (2-3, 3B, 2 R), and Munson (2-4, two 2B, RBI, 2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, Win) had multiple hits for the victors. Heusinkveld (1-3, RBI, 2 R) and Fetterly (1-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R) helped. The Lions were led by Nathan Solberg (3-5, RBI, R), Udstuen (3-5, R), Cleven (2-4, two 2B, 2 RBI), Zach Brumm (2-5, R), Isaac Griffin (1-3, RBI, 2 R), and L-Brumm (1-5, 2B, 3 RBI). The most distinguishing statistic was the number of stranded runners. SG left 14 runners on base, while the Bulldogs stranded eight. GMLOK is 4-5, 6-6.
Four RBIs in Brownsville
A couple of teams looking for wins played a game denoted by multiple four RBI-days, as Houston softball trekked to Brownsville to take on Caledonia/Spring Grove. The visiting Hurricanes led 5-2 after the top half of four innings, but the Warriors exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning. They scored three more in the sixth for a 12-6 victory.
