Eugene Leroy Voight passed on the evening of November 24, 2023, in the loving presence of his family after a fierce five-year fight with advanced lung cancer.
Gene (Gene-O) was born in the small town of Holdrege, Nebr., to Maxine (Ray) Linstroth and Darold Voight. After the unexpected loss of his father, Maxine moved the family to Preston, Minn., to be closer to her parents. At the early age of 13, Gene stepped into a supportive role for his three siblings: Judy (Johnson), Jaquilne (Kimber), and Jimmy Voight. After graduating from Preston High School, Gene stayed close to home and attended college in Winona, MN, and then returned to Preston, the community he loved so dearly, to build his life. Gene dedicated his career to working for the Fillmore County Highway Department. For those who knew Gene, it makes perfect sense that he would prioritize a career that would enable him to spend his time working in and with the Southeastern MN landscape he loved and appreciated. Gene’s loving and dedicated participation in life and his relationships is undoubtedly his legacy and will forever be an inspiration to all that he touched. He continued to live his life to the fullest throughout his cancer journey, enjoying his family, friendships, golfing, fishing, hunting and bowling. His strength will forever provide hope for others fighting the disease.
He was an adoring husband to his wife Cynthia Voight, a loving father to his daughter Danielle Voight (and Tucker Gerrick), stepsons Damian and Doug Masterson, and a dedicated spirited Papa to his only grandchild and light of his life, Evzen Gerrick. Gene’s loyalty and love for his family and friends was truly immeasurable. Thank you to his oncology team, Seasons Hospice, and the Preston community that so lovingly supported, held, and comforted Gene and his family.
There will be a celebration of Gene-O on December 9 from 12-3 p.m. at the Preston Golf Course.
