Houston Girls Stay Perfect

They are the only “Journal 10” basketball team yet to taste defeat. Houston’s girls pressed, stole, and scored in transition to the tone of two more wins. At Lanesboro, the ‘Canes started the game 19-3. Lanesboro closed to down 30-22 late in the half. But Houston wore the Burros out with its half-court press. A 21-2 second half run blew the game open. Dale Moga’s group prevailed 69-37. Emma Geiwitz had a season-high (32 pts, 13-25 FGs, 5-6 FTs, 7 rebs, 8 stls). Becca Rostad (14 pts, 6 rebs, 8 stls) and Priya Kingsley (7 pts, 4 rebs, 7 asts, 8 stls) were also extra busy. Allison Papenfuss (8 pts) and Lilly Carr (5 pts, 6 rebs, 4 stls) helped. Houston had 34 steals, Lanesboro 41 turnovers. Brielle Ruen (12 pts, 5 rebs), Sydney Taylor (9 pts, 14 rebs), and Malia Tessum (7 pts, 6 rebs) did work for the Burros. Lanesboro fell to 2-2, 2-3. The ‘Canes then took on L-O in a re-scheduled game. Houston cruised to a 79-37 win. Rostad notched a career-high (25 pts, 4-12 threes, 5-6 FTs, 5 rebs, 8 asts, 5 stls). Geiwitz (22 pts, 4-5 FTs, 10 rebs, 7 asts, 4 stls) got to 20 points a fifth time. Kingsley (15 pts, 6-12 FGs, 5 sts, 6 stls) also had career-high. Papenfuss (8 pts, 4-6 FGs) and Carr (4 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts, 6 stls) helped. L-O was led by Kelly Hanson (season-high 20 pts, 9-10 FGs), who did over half her teams’ scoring. Benita Nolt added 6 (pts) and 15 (rebs). Over the two contests, Houston made 22 of 30 free throws (73%) and tallied 63 steals. They played minus the Torgerson sisters both games. The ‘Canes (5-0, 5-0) lead the SEC-East.
Knight Girls Win Fourth Straight

Kingsland girls basketball lost its first game of the season (non-conference). They haven’t lost since. Four straight wins have Steve Hauser’s team on a win streak and atop their division. Kingsland dispatched with L/P 64-23, pulling away with a 36-7 second half (led 28-16 at intermission). Seniors Ellie Buchholtz (14 pts, 6 rebs) and Morgan Langeslag (10 pts, 5-5 FGs) got to double figures. Sam Wernimont (9 pts, 4 rebs, 4 stls), Kennedy Fenske (7 pts), Audrey Webster (4 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts, 6 stls), Shelby Beck (5 pts, 5 rebs), and Emily Miner (6 pts, 5 rebs) also did work. A couple nights later, they controlled Southland in a 53-46 win. Kingsland jumped out 7-2. Southland only cut it to a one-score game once (37-34). Kingsland then immediately went 9-0 to lead 46-34. Merredith Farlinger (14 pts, 7-9 FGs) had a season-high. Buchholtz (13 pts, 4-5 FTs, 7 rebs) also got to double digits. Beck (6 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 3 stls), Wernimont (6 pts, 4 asts), and Miner (6 pts, 3-4 FGs) helped. It’s been a team thing. At least seven Kingsland girls have scored in every game. The Knights (3-0, 4-1) lead the SEC West.
Burros Pull Narrow Sweep of Cougars
Over the course of two days, Mabel-Canton and Lanesboro played a basketball series. Each game was close. On Monday, the boys went to battle. The Burros were less than a week removed from losing All-SEC guard John Prestemon (broken foot), but also from getting a big
win (without Prestemon) over Randolph. Lanesboro took the lead early (14-6) and seemingly had things in control. They led 39-27 with under 7:00 to play. But the rollercoaster ride began with about 5:00 left. After registering five field goals (5 of 22) over 21 possessions to start the second half, M-C made a five straight! In around two minutes, the Cougars went from down 12 (39-27) to down one (39-38) courtesy of an 11-0 run! The key possession was Lanesboro’s in the final minute. Leading 42-40, the Burros ran off 31 of the final 35 seconds. M-C finally took possession with 3.8 left. Cayden Tollefsrud front-rimmed a ¾ court shot at the buzzer. Lanesboro held on, 42-40. Ryan Holmen, a 6’2” senior center, led the effort (15 pts, 6-11 FGs, 8 rebs). Sawyer Johnson (8 pts, 6 rebs) and Hayden Lawstuen (6 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts) helped. Tollefsrud (8 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts, 5 stls) and Reid Crawford (8 pts) led M-C. Jaymeson Tollefsrud added 7 (pts) and 4 (rebs). The girls game was similar. The Burros held M-C to just seven first half points (17-7). The lead grew to 21-7 early in the second. The Cougars chipped away. M-C pulled even at 27-27. Lanesboro ended the game 7-2 for the 34-29 win. The Burros were 1 of 14 from distance, M-C 2 of 10. Lanesboro was plus five points at the free throw line (10 of 16 to M-C’s 5 of 10). Brielle Ruen (11 pts, 9 rebs) and Kaci Ruen (10 pts, 5-9 FGs, 14 rebs) led the victors. Sydney Taylor (6 pts, 6 rebs) and Malia Tessum (5 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 4 stls) helped. Jordyn Newgard (9 pts, 4 rebs), Kinley Soiney (9 pts, 9 rebs, 3 stls), and MaKenzie Kelly (9 pts) all kicked three field goals for M-C.
GM/FC Girls Rematch 2020 1A Semifinal
The last time the teams faced each other, it was a 2020 1A semifinal. FC’s girls had GM down big (30-11, 36-19), only to desperately hold on (43-41), eventually making state. The two schools faced off in a 1A non-con match-up. GM started the game 11-3, hitting five of its first seven shots. But 5’0” FC sophomore guard Courtney Hershberger had herself a game. She hit a trio of first half threes to help the Falcons recover. FC hit seven trifectas in the stanza, going to intermission up 32-31. GM started the second half hitting three straight threes to lead 40-36. They had just three more field goals. Over a 16-possession stretch, the Larks scored just two points (1-6 FGs, 11 TOs). For the game, GM had 23 turnovers to FC’s 11. The Falcons took a six point lead (50-44) just under the four-minute mark, and had a key possession later (dribbled off around 1:30 of the clock). The Falcons prevailed 53-48. Hershberger (18 pts, 4-9 threes) led the way. She entered with 20 career points. Maddie Krage (11 pts, 3-4 FTs, 2-2 threes), Kammry Broadwater (9 pts, 4-6 FTs), and Lauren Mensink (7 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts) helped. GM was led by Kendyl Queensland (14 pts, 6-12 FGs) and Lexy Foster (8 pts, 10 rebs). River Landers added 7 (pts), 6 (rebs), and 3 (asts). FC was plus-eight at the free throw line (14-20 to 6-7). They shot a season-best 9 of 24 from distance. After a 12 of 25 shooting first half, the Larks went 6 of 19 in the second. GM fell to 2-2, 2-4.
Johnson Bros Spark Gophers to Two Wins

There will be bigger fish to take on. The level of competition for Chatfield boys basketball the week of January 25 wasn’t top notch, but wins are wins. Jeff DeBuhr’s Gophers easily handled W-K and Cotter (on the road) to run their win streak to three. Versus the Falcons, Chatfield had it in hand by halftime, up 39-20. They prevailed 76-43. Reid Johnson (25 pts, 5-10 threes, 7 rebs) led the way hitting five triples. Brother Cole Johnson (10 pts, 4-7 FGs, 11 rebs, 8 asts), just a sophomore, neared a triple-double. David Castleberg (8 pts, 4-7 FGs, 8 rebs), Henry Gathje (8 pts, 3-4 FGs), and Drew Schindler (7 pts) helped. Chatfield hit 12 of 16 free throws (75%) and had 17 assists to 11 turnovers. A night later, the Gophers trekked to Winona and beat Cotter 61-43. Chatfield led 40-10 at one point. The senior Johnson (25 pts, 8-14 FGs, 3-9 threes, 6-7 FTs, 5 rebs) had a very efficient offensive night. Schindler (10 pts) also hit double figures. The sophomore Johnson again stuffed the stat sheet (8 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts, 7 stls). Castleberg added 8 (pts) and 5 (rebs). The Gophers again had a solid night at the free throw line, hitting 13 of 18 (72%). Reid (25 pts, 6 rebs) and Cole (9 pts, 8.5 rebs, 7 asts, 4.5 stls) put up big averages in the games. The Gophers improved to 2-1, 3-1. They started last year 1-10.
